About Helen

B.A,  PG Dip.Couns., MNZAC

Helen Stewart is a counsellor who has specialised training and experience in working with trauma and abuse. Her private practice work in NZ and the UK has also involved working on relational issues with couples, grief and loss, and helping clients to overcome addictions, depression and anxiety. She trained at Otago University, where she completed a Degree in Education and a Post Graduate Diploma in Counselling. She has had further training in counselling, focusing on therapy for adult survivors of sexual violation and childhood sexual abuse, working with couples, and dealing with depression and anxiety. Helen is committed to enhancing her therapeutic practice through professional development opportunities, and she considers it very important to continue strengthening her bicultural awareness where possible.    

 

Helen’s experience includes counselling in Christchurch agencies and four years working intensively with women at Dunedin Women’s Refuge and Auckland Rape Crisis. In addition, she ran a private practice for two years in the UK, where she worked as the practice counsellor in the Blackbird Leys Medical Centre and the Wellbeing Clinic in Oxford. Helen has run a private practice in Dunedin since the beginning of 2010.

 

Helen is a registered member of the New Zealand Association of Counsellors. She has served on the NZAC Otago Branch Committee from 2012 to 2018. During this time, she was the branch treasurer for four years. Helen is also an approved counsellor for Vitae and Benestar EAP Services (Employment Assistance Program).
